This morning, Nicki Minaj decided to make her return to Hot 97 by making an appearance on the Hot 97 Morning Show. This is the first time her and Rosenberg have sat down with each other since the Summer Jam incident last year. She talks about the Summer Jam situation, her success, going back to her mixtape roots, her upcoming album, shooting a movie with Cameron Diaz and much more.
Nicki Minaj looks young and fabulous, screw faced on the cover of June/July issue of Teen Vogue magazine. Her upcoming big performance will at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards on May 19th. Check out a few excerpts of her interview from the issue below!
On the music biz: “People treat this business like it’s high school. It can absolutely feel like one big popularity contest, and you know what? I can’t be bothered. I can’t allow myself to play ridiculous games with grown adults in the industry. I can’t be nice to someone just because they’re hot right now. I can’t do it.”
On her rough childhood: “Every time my parents fought, my mother would have us move and I would have to go to a new school, which meant I’d have to face the task of making new friends. I dreaded it. I had butterflies in my stomach each time: Are people going to like or hate me? … Sometimes there’d be a fight, sometimes not. I let people know I wasn’t going to be pushed around.”
On social media: “I used to read the bad things people said about me. Then I asked myself, ‘Why am I reading that when I have millions of people saying great things?’ You cannot give negativity power. I tell teens, if you’re having a problem, there’s nothing wrong with deleting your social media. If people keep taunting you and you keep reading it, it’s poison.”
Yesterday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, American Idol judge Nicki Minaj confesses that she's worried about looking like 'a crazy psycho again' on the popular singing competition.
"I am not really a crazy psycho you guys," Nicki says, referring to the infamous web video that showed the singer/rapper launching into a tirade during Idol auditions. "No, I am serious. I am really not."
Nicki calls the outburst a defense mechanism, explaining that she began to suspect that fellow judge Mariah Carey was displeased with her being on the panel.
With the incident still fresh in her mind, Nicki admits that she is "not looking forward to live shows" because she "cannot trust [herself]."
"Just, like, if there's a slick comment being made..." Nicki says before catching herself. "I just want it to go well. It's about the contestants."
“I don’t know. It was just to big old divas, I guess. I was just like sitting there. and I guess before I went in there I heard all the stuff that was being said but I didn’t believe it. I heard them saying Mariah doesn’t want you on the panel but I was like, no. I am friends with Mariah. I was like arguing people down. Like, don’t believe everything you read, you’re crazy. And so I went there and I started to feel a bit of the shade. And I just kind of over compensated by being crazier. And I don’t think that really…
…If you know someone maybe doesn’t like you. It’s kind of like, now you’re gonna like really go in and show hey, because it’s like a defense mechanism. You know what I mean? It’s really that. You’re feelings are hurt and you can’t believe it so you kind of just compensate with being crazy.”
