VIDEO PREMIERE: Dawn Richard - 'AUTOMATIC'

Dawn Richard sends a bold message in the visuals for "Automatic," a song featured on her Armor On EP. While the track details the story of a lover declaring independence from a controlling partner, the video finds the singer transforming from a golden robot to a black symbiotic entity, the latter being the true self she identifies with.

"For this video, we wanted to show the depth and versatility to our story," the former Danity Kane star tells The BoomBox. "With 'Bombs,' we focused on full out choreography. We wanna bring something new every time we release a visual. With 'Automatic,' it's more story-focused. It's the rebellion against what the world wants you to be and what really lies underneath it all when you realize your own self-worth."

In the Michael Johnson-directed clip, Richard and two female dancers showcase energetic choreography, contorting their bodies and displaying synchronized moves. The songstress sports metallic paint in one scene and a blonde bob paired with black body makeup in another.

"Automatic" is the follow-up to the entertainer's first Armor On single "Bombs."

The songtress who received a BET Awards 2012 Nomination alongside her former group Diddy-Dirty Money for best group of 2012, discusses her career, personal style and industry crushes,and various other topics. Excerpts and more photos below. 

• Where do you see your music career going in the next 5 years?

Dawn: “I would hope that my music reaches the masses without losing anyone in the process. I think musically when people listen to this RnB and watch the dance that goes along with it the movements are a little bit more moving, than when people simply listen to other RnB.  I hope that the word innovative would be used a lot. I hope that after people have seen the same thing over and over again,  their eyes will be open to something different. I am a storyteller, and I would love to be telling who I am while continuing to push the envelope through my music.”

 

• What has been one of the most memorial moments in the your music career? 

Dawn:“There are so many moments, I have had an amazing timeline of events. I think the time when I made the group Dainty Kane, as well as the time I got to work with Legend Grace Jones.”

• On personal style

“I am a huge fan of pushing the envelope, I am a hippy at heart. I enjoy mixing different prints and patterns together.”

• On her crushes?

“Zoe Kravitz,  I love her acting, style, and modeling career. Zoe Saldana is another one of my crushes.”

• On man crush

“James Dean  if he were still existent he would be my man crush. He provided a sense of inspiration in fashion, and really defined the ultimate cool, to be the choices I make in my old world.”

MUSIC NEWS: Dawn Richard performs at the House of Blues in L.A.

 

“Ya’ll ready to dance?” asked Dawn Richard as she commanded the stage at the House of Blues in West Hollywood on Thursday night on PJ Morton’s tour.

During the 30-minute set, the former Danity Kane member thrilled with cuts off her EP Armor On including “Save Me From U” and “Change,” Dirty Money’s “Ass on the Floor,” and crowd-pleasing covers of Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U” and “Purple Rain.”

She served up her own remixes to Frank Ocean’s “Novacane” and Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “Ni**as in Paris,” closing with her Druski-produced single “Bombs.
