R&B stars Faith Evans, Nicci Gilbert, Keke Wyatt, Syleena Johnson, and Monifah Carter are joining the reality show circuit. "R&B Divas" will premiere on cable network TV One on Aug. 20 (10 p.m. EST).
The eight-episode, one-hour series chronicles the ladies' long-running friendship as well as their professional lives and personal challenges. Spurred by Evans, the quintet comes together to produce a charity album inspired by Whitney Houston. Proceeds from the album will benefit the Whitney E. Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts in East Orange, New Jersey. As this project unfolds, so does a candid look at other career and personal issues affecting the divas, including motherhood, divorce, alcohol and physical abuse as well as entrepreneurial pursuits.
Gilbert, one third of 90's girl group Brownstone, recently unveiled her Curvato fashion line during Full Figured Fashion Week in New York City. And Evans is a partner in Glass Hair Products, which launched in New York City on June 14.
"These ladies have known each other in the industry for quite a while," says TV One executive VP of original programming and production Toni Judkins. "We aren't creating relationships for the sake of a television show, so their actions, relationships and emotions are authentic and true to life-and it makes for a powerful narrative."
Originally titled "Ladies of R&B," TV One's "R&B Divas" is filmed primarily in Atlanta, with additional shooting in Washington, D.C., New York and New Orleans.
